The Immigrant and Refugee Health Interest Group (IRHIG) is hosting the first of two Skills Nights on Wednesday, March 8 from 6-8 pm! We are partnering with the U of M’s Adult ESL Program for Newcomers located at the Massey Building, 294 William Avenue (corner of William & Princess), a 5 minute drive from campus.
What we have scheduled:
1) free dinner and a short presentation for EAL students on common diseases and available healthcare resources and Q&A
2) an interactive role-play history-taking session
3) demonstration of basic techniques of physical exams (BP, HR, reflexes)
4) interview of students on their experiences as immigrants to Canada.
If there is sufficient interest, we will be holding a “BYOB” debrief dinner/”afterparty” at a nearby restaurant (last year was at Stella’s on Osborne) after the skills night is over. As much as we’d love to buy you all dinner, our Interest Group is a wee one with a very limited budget.
If you are selected, please bring your stethoscope, reflex hammer, and penlight. If you have a BP cuff, please bring it as well!
This Skills Night counts for your GHCP volunteer hours! If you have any questions, please contact your IRHIG Reps (Med 2: Ali and Jav; Med 1: Simmi and Antonia).
Thank you for your interest!
