Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport Syndrome (RED-S) or Low Energy Availability (LEA)

April 11, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Working as a sports dietitian, I far too often see athletes (male and female) who find themselves in a state of low energy availability (LEA). Athletes participating in certain sports are at a heightened risk of being in LEA. This may be related to food insecurity and finances, lack of knowledge or ability to transfer knowledge into practice, or dysfunctional eating behaviours with/without body image concerns. We will discuss in more detail what RED-S is, who it impacts, and how we can work to help athletes overcome obstacles contributing to LEA, health and performance impacts of training, and competing in an LEA state.

Topics to be covered:

  • What is LEA/RED-S?
  • What are the health consequences of RED-S?
  • What are the multiple performance consequences of RED-S?
  • How do we manage/prevent this syndrome?
