Humans of CaRMS – Anesthesiology

[acc-trig title=”Which specialty did you match into? And where?”]
[acc-begin]

Anesthesiology – UBC

[acc-trig title=”At what point in medical school did you know what specialty you wanted to match into?”]
[acc-begin]

My first experience with Anesthesia didn’t come until shadowing experiences between my second and third years. However, I wasn’t sure whether this was the specialty for me until about half way into clerkship, where I was still debating between internal medicine and anesthesia. I enjoyed both specialties very much and saw myself as quite happy in either, ultimately applying to both for CaRMS

[acc-trig title=”Do you feel that your choice of electives had any impact on your CaRMS match?”]
[acc-begin]

Quite possibly. I tried to keep my electives fairly similar in terms of content (anesthesia, ICU, cardiology, respirology, EM). This allowed for a lot of overlap in my applications to both disciplines.

[acc-trig title=”What did you do with your Med 1 and Med 2 summers?”]
[acc-begin]

I completed a BSc Medicine, performing clinical research with a cardiologist.

[acc-trig title=”What was the most valuable lesson or experience you had while going through the match process?”]
[acc-begin]

It can be an expensive and overwhelming process. Accept that, and try not to get too stressed out about things you can’t control.

[acc-trig title=”If you could go back and change anything during pre-clerkship or clerkship, what would you change?”]
[acc-begin]

Try to increase exposures to other disciplines earlier in med 1 and 2.

[acc-trig title=”What did you do in your four years of medical school that you found to be the most helpful during the CaRMS process?”]
[acc-begin]

Research. It looks great on applications, gives you something to talk about, gives you a chance to learn a tremendous amount, get exposure to projects other than just your own, and make connections.

[acc-trig title=”Do you have any final words of wisdom or advice?”]
[acc-begin]

I think every discipline in medicine has at least something that will align with your interests. Try to find those things to appreciate each rotation and have a little more fun!
