SuicideTALK

November 1, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Free

The Wellness Speaker Series Team is excited to host our (second annual) first event of the year: SuicideTALK.

This 1.5 hour session will bring students into an open, informative and safe space to talk about suicide – topic that even in our field of study, is still somewhat taboo. The reality of its prevalence in the community, and how it affects each and every one of us will be discussed in depth. This session will be led by our very own Rikki Fontaine of Student Services. (Note: Because of the sensitive nature of the talk, we will have Leah Deane as well as several students act as support persons during the session as needed.)

The main premise of the workshop is to analyze the question: “should we talk about suicide?” and if yes, how do we do so safely and effectively? This session also provides an opportunity to reflect on how stigma and personal bias can affect our ability to help people experiencing suicidal ideation.

SuicideTALK uses the acronym TALK to represent the needs of caregivers and persons at risk of suicide: Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep Safe. The use of introspective questions, group discussion and dyadic exercises gives participants the chance to learn more about not only how people at risk of suicide may feel, but also what it’s like to be a caregiver to someone who is experiencing suicidal thoughts.

SuicideTALK is the first of several skills-based training sessions centered around suicide prevention. Please attend to learn more about how you can get involved in more extensive future training opportunities!
