The MMSA is a strong advo­cate for the per­son­al health and well-being of med­ical learn­ers through­out their edu­ca­tion.

Our Well­ness Rep­re­sen­ta­tive col­lab­o­rates with the Depart­ment of Stu­dent Affairs, Stu­dent Ser­vices, the Cana­di­an Fed­er­a­tion of Med­ical Stu­dents, and Doc­tors Man­i­to­ba to ensure the deliv­ery of effec­tive well­ness pro­gram­ming.

This sec­tion pro­vides infor­ma­tion on main­tain­ing phys­i­cal and emo­tion­al well-being, as well as resources to sup­port your over­all wellness.

Student Services at Bannatyne Campus

You can self-refer to the SS@BC office by phone at (204) 272-3190, email or in person to meet with one of the Confidential Intake and Triage Specialists. They can refer you to services, including psychologists and other mental health supports. These services are not connected to the Max Rady College of Medicine Student Affairs, and no sharing of information occurs unless requested by you with written consent.

UGME Student Affairs

The Student Affairs team has a number of staff members who can assist you with various needs, including goal setting, interview preparation, exam troubles, accommodation issues, elective planning, and career counselling. Please reach out to Student Affairs at studentaffairsmed@umanitoba.ca to contact the team member you need.

University Counselling Services at Bannatyne

The Student Counselling Centre (SCC) offers free and confidential counselling services at the Bannatyne campus to all students in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). Medicine students are encouraged to contact 204-272-3190 to schedule an intake appointment or drop by S211 Medical Services Building (please note that you may not be able to see a counsellor if you drop by, as they may be attending to other students). Medicine students are also eligible to attend counselling at the Fort Garry campus (474 University Centre).

Max Rady College of Medicine Counselling

Free, confidential consultation and treatment for students experiencing emotional stress from the Department of Psychiatry. For appointments, email bcstudentservices@umanitoba.ca. More info can be found here.

Doc360 Supports

Physician & Family Support Program

The Physician and Family Support Program (PFSP) provides counselling, physician-led peer support, and system navigation assistance. This confidential program is available at no charge to medical learners, resident physicians, practicing physicians, retired physicians, MLPIMG participants, their spouses, and dependant children 12 and older. 

 

Physicians at Risk (PAR)

PAR offers support to physicians, residents, and medical students as a self-referral service that provides physician-led peer support and confidential, couple and individual counseling, assessment, treatment, service navigation and advocacy. 

PAR provides support to Doctors Manitoba members for concerns, including: substance use/​addictions. mood and anxiety disorders, and other complex needs.

Strength Through Healthy Living

Fitness and Recreation

Medical students enrolled at the University of Manitoba may activate their Recreation Services Student Membership at the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre on the Bannatyne campus, as well as at the Active Living Centre on the Fort Garry Campus. The Joe Doupe Recreation Centre is a recently renovated facility that includes a fitness centre, multi-use gymnasium, indoor track, multi-use studio, lockers, and shower facilities. You can also register for fitness classes and intramural sports. Please contact your class council’s athletic reps for more information on joining intramurals.

Health and Dental Insurance

All students are automatically registered for a health and dental plan through the University of Manitoba Students' Union. You can opt out of the plan if you have alternate insurance.
