Family Medicine – Winnipeg

End of Med 2 I was fairly certain, but used Med 3 and Electives to rule out other possibilities I hadn’t had much previous exposure to make the final decision.

[acc-trig title=”Do you feel that your choice of electives had any impact on your CaRMS match?”]
[acc-begin]

I felt that my electives were fairly well rounded (not a single focus – PMR, family, emerg, palliative care, psych), and well applicable to the areas I was considering applying to. Electives were also a great opportunities to talk to other students and physicians about all kinds of things and I felt that I really took advantage of that and those personal experiences provided me with useful content for interviews and important things to take away for future practice.

[acc-trig title=”What did you do with your Med 1 and Med 2 summers?”]
[acc-begin]

BScMed, as well as a Northern Remote early exposure

[acc-trig title=”What was the most valuable lesson or experience you had while going through the match process?”]
[acc-begin]

To be patient and have faith in yourself and what you have accomplished so far. There were many moments of self doubt and ‘why would they want to pick me?’ or ‘will I measure up compared to others?’; but the process gave me a lot of time to reflect on all of the milestones I passed, things I had achieved academically and personally, and it also allowed for introspection that made me see myself in a different light by the end of the whole process.

[acc-trig title=”If you could go back and change anything during pre-clerkship or clerkship, what would you change?”]
[acc-begin]

I would always wear comfortable shoes, have a water bottle and snack handy and make sure to always have spare socks on surgery/obs rotations. In seriousness though I’d maybe tell myself to study more and be a bit more confident, but ultimately I did the best I could and it seems to have worked out to this point.

[acc-trig title=”What did you do in your four years of medical school that you found to be the most helpful during the CaRMS process?”]
[acc-begin]

I grew as a person. Moved out, got married, stayed close with my family and friends. I continued to do things outside of school when I could and also participated in some additional academic forums (BScMed, early exposure). I think that having a balance and being able to show that was important for me in the process.
